Thank you for visiting the Governor & First Lady’s Medals for Service page! The Governor & First Lady’s Medals for Service are designed to distinguish individual volunteers, business volunteer programs and nonprofit leaders whose innovation in the field of volunteerism have had a tangible impact on their community, region and the state of California. Shining a spotlight on the state’s commitment to service, the awards demonstrate how simple acts can create big changes in communities across California.
We encourage and invite you to nominate individuals, businesses and nonprofits who are creating ripples of positive change throughout our communities and our great state. The categories for the Governor & First Lady’s Medals for Service are as follows:
- California’s Volunteer of the Year
Honoring an outstanding Californian whose volunteer service is exemplary and inspirational - California’s Business Volunteer Program of the Year
Honoring an outstanding California business with an innovative, high-impact employee volunteer program - California’s Nonprofit Leader of the Year
Honoring a California nonprofit leader who has shown an extraordinary ability to leverage volunteers in service to their organization - California’s Social Innovation Spotlight Award Honoring a California business who has invested resources to propel the service movement forward
Nominations must be received by CaliforniaVolunteers by June 30, 2010. For additional details, including eligibility, nomination packets, etc., please see the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section below.
Special Instructions

The following guidelines offer a brief overview of the rules and guidelines for nominations for a Governor & First Lady’s Medal for Service. These overview rules are not designed to be all encompassing. Please see the Official Rules & Guidelines for complete details.
- Nominations must be received by CaliforniaVolunteers no later than 5:00pm TBD. All nominations must be completed, on-time, in their entirety. Partial and/or late nominations, and late letters of support and additional materials will not be accepted.
- All nominations must include a letter of support from someone other than the Nominator or the Nominee. This letter should be attached as a Word or PDF document to the online form, if submitting the nomination online. (Note that online document uploading may take a few minutes, depending on file size.)
- Additional materials are optional. They can include additional relevant information about the nominee, additional letters of support, photos, testimonials, news clippings, pamphlets, etc. PDF documents are preferred; Word documents are acceptable. If submitting the nomination online, additional materials should be sent to: TBD. The subject line of the email should read: “Additional Materials: (Nominee Name)”.
- Electronic materials (video, CD, etc.) are acceptable and should be included as part of a mail-in nomination. Electronic materials should be no longer than 5 minutes in length.
- When submitting online, click the “Submit” button ONLY ONCE. Clicking “Submit” more than once will result in an error and may require you to complete the form again.
- It is strongly recommended that you write and save the nomination narrative in a separate document, then cut and past the narrative into the online nomination form. This will provide you with a backup document should the online nomination result in an error.
