The next anticipated AmeriCorps grant competition will begin in the summer of 2009 to support AmeriCorps programming beginning the fall of 2010. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 AmeriCorps Funding Opportunities
The due date for applications for these funds was March 25, 2009. This information is provided for reference purposes only.
CaliforniaVolunteers is pleased to release guidance on the AmeriCorps funding opportunities supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The purpose of this funding is to support additional AmeriCorps members to engage in activities that will address the current economic crisis. Applications for these funds are limited to existing CaliforniaVolunteers AmeriCorps subgrantees. Please see the documents below for additional information and application instructions and forms.

California Green Jobs Corps
CaliforniaVolunteers and the Employment Development Department (EDD), in coordination with the California Workforce Investment Board and the Labor and Workforce Development Agency, have announced the availability of California Green Jobs Corps grants funds. Grants will be awarded to organizations that will administer local California Green Jobs Corps program. California Volunteer Matching Network Hub Grants
CaliforniaVolunteers partners with local “Hubs” to provide on-the-ground coverage throughout California. A Hub is a volunteer connector organization that provides customer service to potential volunteers as well as nonprofit organizations posting volunteer opportunities. The backbone of the California Volunteer Matching Network (CVMN) is the Hub organizations. If you are an organization that connects volunteers to service opportunities host by other entities, you are encouraged to consider becoming a CVMN Hub.
Hub applications are accepted throughout the year, with annual grants provided starting in either July or January. In order to receive a hub grant beginning in July 2009 applications are due April 21, 2009. In order to receive a hub grant beginning in January 2009 applications are due October 30, 2009.
Partnership with CaliforniaVolunteers as a Hub grantee provides:
- A small formula grant to support CVMN-related costs based on the number of counties covered in your organization’s service area;
- The potential to host a CVMN AmeriCorps*VISTA member at your organization;
- Increased access to potential volunteers as a result of CaliforniaVolunteers’ statewide presence;
- Promotion of Hubs on the statewide Web site;
- Annual training and technical assistance to share best practices; and,
- Other benefits outlined in the Application Instructions.

CaliforniaVolunteers released the Volunteer Center Capability Building for Disaster RFA on June 16, 2009. Applications were due on July 16, 2009.
The RFA identified a “Grant Program Timeline” on page 5 that stated, “ The following is the grant application timeline. This timeline is subject to change.” The timeline identified that the grant funding decisions were to be made on Wednesday, July 29, 2010. However, CaliforniaVolunteers finds it necessary to announce the grant funding decisions at a later date. As soon as CaliforniaVolunteers confirms the new date, we will notify all applicants by email and post the award date to the website.
Other Grant Opportunities
The Corporation for National and Community Service announced three funding opportunities for student service and service-learning projects totaling $5 million on March 27, 2008:
2008 College Student Social Media Initiative: Approximately $2.3 million is available to facilitate better engagement of college students in service through the use of social media such as Facebook, MySpace, Ning, podcasts, blogs and other social media tools. Successful applicants must demonstrate how their program can use these tools to engage increased numbers of college students, especially in partnership with other nonprofit or for-profit entities. An estimated 12 grants will be made for a project period of up to three years. Applications are due at 5 p.m. eastern time, May 7.
School-Based STEM: Approximately $2 million is available to qualified organizations that will provide financial resources, training, and other assistance to local education agencies to implement service-learning projects as part of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in grades six through 12. An estimated four grants will be made for a project period of up to three years. Eligible applicants include grant-making entities, which are public or private non-profit organizations that can make subgrants in two or more states. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. eastern, April 30.
Indian Tribes Drug Abuse Prevention Initiative: Approximately $1 million is available to Indian Tribes to implement service-learning programs focusing on drug-abuse prevention, especially methamphetamine. Applicants must propose to work with one or more local schools to support youth conducting service-learning projects, as well as working with their local methamphetamine task force supported by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, so that the youth service is linked with existing local drug abuse prevention efforts and coordinates with other federal funding targeting methamphetamine. An estimated six to eight grants will be awarded for a three-year period. The application deadline is 5 p.m. eastern time, April 30.

2009 Flex Your Power Community Outreach Campaign
Seeking well-established non-profit, community-based organizations (CBOs) that have the capacity to reach large numbers of utility customers through creative and engaging outreach activities. Agencies selected through a competitive grant process will receive funding to implement local outreach strategies. Outreach team members are not required to be specialists in energy efficiency. Rather, we are seeking organizations that want to take an active role in educating their communities about ways to save energy, save money and save the environment.

Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation
Accepting applications for grants which support the following program areas: civic affairs, culture, education, health associations, hospitals, social services and youth. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $50,000. The foundation primarily supports programs in California, Florida and North Carolina. Organizations who are tex-exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are eligible to apply.

California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP)
The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is pleased to announce the release of the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP) Program for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). CBOs may apply for up to $160,000 in grant funds. This funding opportunity is a result of Governor Schwarzenegger’s CalGRIP Initiative. The purpose of this RFP process is to select CBOs for grant funding for gang prevention, intervention, reentry, education, job training and skills development, and family and community services. The funds distributed through this RFP process shall be used to test different approaches designed to reduce gang activities in communities and neighborhoods.
