AmeriCorps Funding: Request for Applications
On Monday, October 26, CaliforniaVolunteers released its 2010 AmeriCorps Request for Applications (RFA) to support partnerships that will engage individuals in addressing unmet community needs throughout California. Grants are awarded to organizations that will operate solely in California.
AmeriCorps funding comes to California through two separate funding streams: formula and competitive funds. CaliforniaVolunteers receives formula funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) through a population-based allocation. Subject to the availability of federal appropriations for fiscal year 2010, we anticipate the availability of approximately $14.5 million in state formula funds to award new, recompeting, and continuation AmeriCorps state grants. Competitive funds are awarded through a national competition to programs that have competed successfully at both the state and federal levels. CNCS estimates that $363 million in competitive funding will be available for the national competition to support funding requests. Successful applicants will receive grants to support AmeriCorps member positions that will engage members in service to meet critical needs in California.

Strengthening Communities Fund Grant Received
CaliforniaVolunteers received an ARRA-funded grant of $249,911 through the US Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships. The purpose of this two-year grant is to build the capacity of community-based nonprofits throughout California that are involved in economic recovery activities, including, among other activities: helping low-income individuals secure and retain employment; earn higher wages; obtain better-quality jobs; and, gain greater access to State and Federal benefits and tax credits.
Presidential Forum on Service
On October 16, Secretary Baker was invited as a guest to the Presidential Forum on Service keynoted by former president George H.W. Bush and President Obama. The Presidential Forum commemorated the 20th anniversary of the vision of a thousand "Points of Light," first mentioned in Bush's 1989 inaugural address and which catalyzed the volunteer service movement. The Forum also built upon Obama's "United We Serve" call to all Americans to engage in sustained and meaningful community service.
WE Prepare Statewide Roll Out
WE Prepare, the first of its kind online disaster preparedness campaign, will begin rolling out statewide in November. After a successful pilot program launch in the Los Angeles market, WE Prepare will be penetrating the San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego markets with a variety of strategies to continue capturing mothers and online influencers. The strategies include: a disaster preparedness mommy blogger initiative, a ClearChannel partnership that will include PSAs and an innovative library outreach strategy to promote the WE Prepare customizable children’s book.

“Give A Day. Get A Disney Day.”
Disney Parks is recognizing and inspiring both individuals and families who give their time to help make communities better. The "Give A Day. Get A Disney Day." campaign aims to engage one million people in service through volunteer incentives, new resources to support project development and volunteer leader tools. Also available are self-organizing tools to help people create their own service projects at home and in their own neighborhoods. Volunteers in Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States who serve at a participating organization beginning on January 1, 2010, will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Disney theme park at either Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, or Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

iParticipate: National TV Service Week
During the week of October 19, the Entertainment Industry Foundation mobilized the entertainment community around an initiative designed to inspire a new era of service and volunteerism. The multi-year campaign, called “iParticipate,” aims to make service a part of life for more Americans. As a centerpiece for the initiative, EIF enlisted major broadcast networks including, ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, for a week-long television event beginning Monday, October 19. EIF also produced a series of public service announcements to reinforce the importance of volunteerism. Through these PSAs, EIF will also recognize and encourage support for five key areas of service: Education & Children, Health & Well Being, Economic Development, Environmental Conservation, and Support for Military Families.

Taproot Launches New Webinars for Nonprofits: Leadership Development for Your Grantees
The Taproot Foundation announced a new Leadership Development & Strategic HR Service Grant offering, which will become available to nonprofits in December. These new Service Grants will equip nonprofits with the necessary infrastructure to be more effective leaders of their staff, communicate their needs more clearly to their boards, and enhance services to their communities. As part of the initiative, Taproot will be hosting three FREE webinars. As part of the webinar, participants will discuss the critical needs of nonprofits, hear stories from current and past grant recipients of the Service Grant program, see sample project deliverables, and learn how pro bono consultants can help the organizations you care about strengthen leadership and grow human resources to more effectively serve their constituents.

Learn & Serve America: Summer of Service Grants
Subject to the availability of appropriations for fiscal year 2010, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced the anticipated availability of approximately $1 million for Summer of Service grants to support collaborative efforts to implement community-based service-learning projects during the summer months. Programs will engage middle school students (students who will be enrolled in grades 6 through 9 in the school year following the end of the summer) in community-based service-learning projects that are intensive, structured, supervised, and designed to produce identifiable improvements to the community. This opportunity should provide youth, particularly those from disadvantaged circumstances, with service-learning experiences that will motivate them to become more civically engaged and aspire to obtain higher education. Program participants must complete at least 100 hours of service within the summer program. For this competition, service activities should address environmental and/or disaster preparedness issues relevant to the community served.

A Day of Transformation
On October 26, Secretary Baker participated in A Day of Transformation, a full day lineup of speakers and sessions hosted at the Governor and First Lady’s Conference on Women. The Day of Transformation is designed to help women become architects of change. Secretary Baker moderated a panel to discuss strategies on becoming an entrepreneur in the nonprofit world. She was joined by Premal Shaw, the President of Kiva.org and Elizabet Gelfand Stearns, Chair of The Judy Fund.
