National Preparedness Conference

National Preparedness Conference logo CaliforniaVolunteers, in partnership with the Sacramento Region Citizen Corps Council, sponsored the second annual National Emergency Preparedness Conference, October 11-13 at the Capitol Christian Center in Sacramento.

Under the theme, “Take the Lead in Disaster Readiness”, the conference showcased best practices by emergency responder agencies, disaster relief organizations and citizen volunteers.

Speakers included: R. David Paulison, Director, FEMA; McGregor Scott, United States Attorney, Eastern District; Karen Baker, Executive Director, CaliforniaVolunteers; Henry Renteria, Director, Governor's Office of Emergency Services; and Matthew Bettenhausen, Director, Office of Homeland Security.

The conference culminated on Saturday, October 13, with a limited full-scale disaster exercise. Trained volunteers, including members of the Community Emergency Response Team and the Medical Reserve Corps, responded to a mock disaster that will include flooding, a hospital collapse and large animal rescue. More than 100 government officials observed the drill.
