On August 18, the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and CaliforniaVolunteers will host a conference in Sacramento designed to highlight and strengthen the role of faith-based and community organizations in meeting the needs of their communities, with a special focus on resources and partnership opportunities. This event will provide resources and training on a variety of topics, including volunteer trends and management, disaster preparedness and response, crime prevention/intervention, prisoner reentry, accessing private, state and federal resources and more.
This event is part of a series of regional conferences hosted by the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives across the country and around the world. These events are designed to connect frontline nonprofit organizations with resources to help strengthen and expand the services they offer and facilitate opportunities to network with community partners and government officials. Breakout sessions will feature information on state and federal grants and practical guidance on the grant-writing process; opportunities for non-financial collaboration between government and nonprofit programs; and successful practices of effective human service organizations.
The conference is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register online by Friday, August 8th.

July Heat Wave
Secretary of Service and Volunteering, Karen Baker, hosted two outreach events to educate Californians on health impacts related to excessive heat, which affected large parts of the state earlier this month.
The events were held at the Ted C. Wills Community Center in Fresno and the Hank Lopez Community Center in San Jose. Both centers were used as local cooling centers for residents to escape the high temperatures. Secretary Baker stressed the importance of understanding the impacts of excessive heat and underscored the significance of working together to prepare for any emergency.
“In a situation such as a heat wave, the community can have a profound impact on preventing vulnerable populations from heat related illness and death,” said Karen Baker, Secretary of Service and Volunteering. ”It is crucial that local communities band together to ensure the safety of those who may be at risk.”
Following the press conferences, volunteers canvassed local residential communities to provide preparedness materials and answered heat related questions.

CaliforniaVolunteers Prepared Volunteer Network to Assist Firefighting and Recovery Efforts
Secretary of Service and Volunteering, Karen Baker; Cal Fire Chief Director, Ruben D. Grijalva; Governor Schwarzenegger's Cabinet Secretary, Dan Dunmoyer; Director of Homeland Security, Matt Bettenhausen; Major General William Wade of the California National Guard and others joined President George W. Bush and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in Redding to participate in a briefing on the state's wildfires. During the visit, the Governor and President discussed the effective coordination of resources between California's local, state and federal partners during this wildfire siege, which at its peak included more than 2,000 fires and has scorched 1,032,722 acres to date.
Since the onset of the wildfires burning throughout the state, CaliforniaVolunteers has been working closely with local volunteer centers to register hundreds of volunteers for deployment when needed.
Butte, Monterey, Kern, Trinity and Santa Barbara counties have been the hardest hit by these fires. Within these areas there are over 2,000 trained volunteers, including up to 700 that could be deployed through local disaster volunteer programs. CaliforniaVolunteers also partnered with local volunteer centers to identify those volunteers standing by to assist state and local resources. These volunteers could be immediately deployed upon instruction from local and state officials.
“Our Volunteers In Police Service are an asset to our department and community. If we did not have these folks helping us, our town government would literally collapse against disasters like the Humboldt fire," stated Lt. Al Billington, Paradise Police Department. "Our volunteers assist us throughout the year with parades, community functions, records filing and other clerical work, vacation house checks, traffic control from minor vehicle accidents to major disasters such as flooding, heavy snow fall and fires."
CaliforniaVolunteers.org dedicated a Web page to provide opportunities to those who wish to volunteer or make a donation. Volunteer and donation needs change often during disaster response and recovery, so it is recommended to check the Web site regularly.
Throughout the fire season, CaliforniaVolunteers will continue to work with local volunteer centers throughout the state to register new volunteers and provide resources to those that may be affected.
AmeriCorps Funding 4-1-1
CaliforniaVolunteers, in its role as the state service commission, will soon release a Request for Applications (RFA) for 2009 AmeriCorps grant funding.
Known as the domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps engages program participants – known as AmeriCorps “members” – in service to address local community needs in the areas of education, public safety, health and the environment. AmeriCorps grants provide funding for program staff, living allowances for members, health insurance for full-time members, equipment, supplies and other associated program expenses. Grantees are responsible for recruiting, selecting, training and supervising their members. Eligible applicants include community-based organizations (secular and faith-based), local and state government agencies, K-12 schools, school districts, colleges and universities.
CaliforniaVolunteers plans to conduct AmeriCorps informational sessions throughout the state. Please check our Web site regularly for updates.

The Magic of Connections National Mentoring Summit
The California Mentor Foundation (CMF) and MENTOR will host the “Mentoring--The Magic of Connections” National Mentoring Summit at the Disneyland Resort, September 18-19. The purpose of the summit is to invigorate and mobilize the mentoring community, while motivating and inspiring business and civic leaders to increase their support for mentoring efforts. This continues the tradition of mentoring summits at the Disneyland Resort. Previous speakers have included Colin Powell, George Lucas, Governor Pete Wilson, Lynn Swann and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell. Over 500 people are expected to attend.
Participants will learn from mentoring experts, as well as, business and civic leaders about the benefits of mentoring and the latest developments in the field. The summit will also build skills for mentoring program professionals and demonstrate how communities, faith-based groups and businesses can get involved in supporting young people through mentoring. There will be keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops and exhibitors providing learning opportunities for participants.

ServiceNation Day of Action - September 27
ServiceNation is a national campaign designed to call on the next President and Congress to enact a new national service act aimed at expanding national service to solve our nation’s greatest and most persistent societal challenges. This campaign will launch with a ServiceNation Summit, Sept. 11-12 in New York City, and will be shortly followed by a Day of Action on September 27.
Why Service? Why This Campaign?
Because service is the great equalizer. In the words of Dr. King, "anyone can be great because anyone can serve." Service builds community among people, regardless of their race, gender, or socio economic status.

By organizing an event in your community to demonstrate the impact of service and the need for expanding opportunities to serve.
