A Thank You from CaliforniaVolunteers
Seven years ago, CaliforniaVolunteers embarked on a journey to propel the service movement forward in California. Inspired by Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver, CaliforniaVolunteers and our amazing partners pressed forward with what we already knew - that service and volunteering are key strategies in addressing our communities’ most pressing needs.
As we prepare for a new administration, we can’t help but express our sincere gratitude to all of you who have walked hand in hand with us through this journey. Our successes would not have been possible without your bold leadership and unwavering belief in our mission. We invite you to view our interactive legacy presentation, a vibrant example of the many accomplishments we achieved over the last seven years and a testament to the amazing partnerships we forged with each of you.
Thank you again for all you have done! We look forward to the next chapter!
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, First Lady Maria Shriver Celebrate State Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting
On Tuesday, December 7, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver participated in the 79th Annual State Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, themed A Season of Giving, on the West Lawn of the State Capitol.
“I love this time of year,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “It is the season of giving, sharing and hope. It is also a time to honor and remember our men and women in the armed forces who have sacrificed and given so much so that we may live in peace. During this holiday season, let’s all embody the spirit of these Californians and find a way to give back. I encourage everyone to help those in need, in any way you can.”
Continuing with the A Season of Giving theme, Governor Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver hosted the WE CAN Food Drive during this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Attendees were encouraged to bring food item donations to help families in need in the Sacramento region.
“There is no better time than the holidays to reflect and think about the ways we can help improve the lives of others,” said First Lady Maria Shriver. “Our tree lighting ceremony is a time when we come together to celebrate a season of giving and give back to families who need it most by putting food on their tables. The heartfelt contributions from our partners and from the community to donate food to our WE Can Food Drive will go a long way in feeding families well beyond the holiday season.”
The 55-foot white fir tree is illuminated by 9,000 ultra-low-wattage LED lights, saving 95 percent of the energy that would be consumed by incandescent bulbs. The tree was donated by the U.S. Forest Service, Institute of Forest Genetics.
